A1 to C1 Goethe certificate
A1 Goethe certificate:
for adults and youth
confirms very basic language skills
A2 Goethe certificate:
for adults and youth
A2 exam can only be completed with all four modules
confirms elementary language skills
B1 Goethe certificate:
for adults and youth
The B1 exam can be taken in modules. The four modules "Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing" are tested individually and each module is confirmed with a separate certificate.

A1 Language Certificate - residence permit B
Extension of the residence permit in category B:
For all individuals applying for family reunification, it is mandatory to demonstrate proficiency in a national language.

A1/A2 Goethe certificate - residence permit C
For residence permit category C:
A1 level proficiency is required for reading and writing.
A2 level proficiency is required for speaking and listening.
All individuals applying for a permanent residence permit must provide evidence of their proficiency in a national language.

A2/B1 Goethe certificate
For the Swiss citizenship process:
A2 level proficiency is required for reading and writing.
B1 level proficiency is required for speaking and listening.
All individuals applying for regular or early Swiss citizenship must provide evidence of their proficiency in a national language.
